Bowling Centers Focus on Health

Austin, TX – The Texas Bowling Centers Association (TBCA) announced its support for Senate Bill 368 and House Bill 9 by State Senator Rodney Ellis and State Representative Myra Crownover which addresses smoking in public places.

Association Executive Director, Karen Miller said, “TBCA welcomes the opportunity to stand with State Senator Rodney Ellis and State Representative Myra Crownover in support of S.B. 368 and H.B. 9 designed to protect the health of the many employees who, because of their employment, are exposed to cigarette smoke throughout their work day.  We are supporting these measures for our 11,000 employees and their families.”  These bills would prohibit smoking in public places, places of employment, and seating areas of outdoor events.

The Association represents 112 bowling centers across Texas that serve thousands of bowlers.  “We also want to protect our patrons.  Bowling provides family recreation and we want our young bowlers to grow up to be healthy bowlers,” Miller added.

The trend in bowling is now toward open play rather than league play, and bowling centers across Texas are adapting to that new dynamic. The association has noticed an increase in the numbers of casual bowlers as well as an increase in the number of families with children who are bowling.

Ms. Miller continued by finally stated, “We know that for many bowlers this change will be difficult, but we are going to work with them to assure their bowling experience is not diminished.  They may even find they are bowling better.”
